Fifteen passengers were rushed to safety after the minibus in which they were travelling caught on fire at Hastings, Christ Church.
The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Monday, moments after the driver of B318, Wayne Jordan, exited the junction at the Garrison Savannah.
The vehicle had travelled from Speightstown and was on its way to Oistins.
He told reporters on the scene that after he saw the flames coming from the right rear tyre of the vehicle, he stopped by the Hastings/Worthing Police Station and told the passengers to disembark.
“When I turned by the Garrison, I saw the fire so I told the people to get out quick and I tried to out it. I used a whole fire extinguisher, but the fire truck had to come and finish put it out,” Jordan said.
He said the fire likely started because of the brake fluid.
While noting how severe the situation could have been, Jordan said he was thankful no one was injured.
“I feel pretty good, but the best thing was that nobody got hurt. It is a setback but we have life,” he added.
He spoke as police redirected traffic and four fire officers, led by Acting Leading Fire Officer Gregory Clarke, extinguished the flames.
“When we arrived we saw one minibus with smoke coming from the right side rear tyre. We quickly brought the fire under control,” Clarke said. (TG)
