Barbados will soon have new national honours in keeping with its bid to shake off the vestiges of colonialism as it moves towards becoming a republic.

And while the Gold and Silver Crowns Of Merit will be known as the Golden and Silver Trident of Excellence, respectively, and groups of people can be awarded, individuals recognised previously for their significant or meritorious contributions and accorded knighthoods and other national honours will maintain the “privilege of the title and station” if they wish.

There are other changes in the Barbados National Honours And Decorations Bill 2021, but not all existing honours will be tossed out after an examination of honours under legislation and statue said Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Dale Marshall who introduced it in the House of Assembly yesterday.

He said some would continue, such as the Order Of Freedom Of Barbados, first awarded in 2019. (GMB)
