It’s been more than nine years since a female Barbadian jockey rode at the Garrison Savannah, the last being Ria Lythcott in June 2012.
Last Saturday, 27-year-old mother Cadejah Arthur joined the short list of local women riders at the historic venue when she saddled Shakedemupnoble in the fourth race and Classical Dancer in the eighth race on the card for Barbados Derby Day.
She follows in the footsteps of former champion jockey Sonia Perkins, the most famous of them all; Amanda Marshall, the daughter of former champion trainer Bill Mill Marshall; Suzanne Nicholls and Lythcott.
Arthur spoke to multimedia journalist Nick Maitland after the first ride.
