New fisheries legislation on the way

Minister of Maritime Affairs Kirk Humphrey hopes to have the new fisheries legislation in place by early 2022.

And if Government has its way, the Barbados Coast Guard will have more powers to intervene, the use of seine nets to catch chubs will be illegal and fishermen engaged in pot fishing will have to register with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy.

He made these points on Monday during the reopening ceremony of the Payne’s Bay Fish Market, which had been closed for renovations earlier this year.

“Once these regulations are put into law we will allow seine net fishing for persons who are catching jacks, but we will not allow seine net fishing for chubs [parrot fish]. Some pot fishers have complained about others and now you cannot trouble somebody else’s pot fish, that now becomes illegal,” Humphrey said. (TG)
