The Barbados Light & Power’s application for new licences is in no way surprising.

And the Barbados Sustainable Energy Cooperative Society (CoopEnergy Barbados) isn’t about to take it lying down.

CoopEnergy believes the utility company’s recent action is nothing but a mad scramble for new licences because its current model of doing business is outdated, and revealed yesterday it had registered a formal complaint with the Minister of Energy on the issue of new licences to the power company.

In a media statement, the society said that the BL&P’s current “licence”, which it holds until 2028, is of little value, given the reality of the proposed new energy framework Barbados is hoping to reach within the next few years.
