Government is pushing to complete most of its housing refurbishment programme by the end of the year.

During a media tour on Tuesday of two homes nearing completion in St James, Minister of Housing Dr William Duguid said there were making inroads although he admitted it was going more slowly than preferred.

“We’ve been able to mobilise more than 266 repairs and 134 rebuilds. Of that, 16 homes have been completely rebuilt and 108 repairs completed. It is not going as quick as we would like, but it is a significant start,” he said.

Duguid said there were initially 540 houses to be rebuilt and 680 to be repaired and more reports were coming in.

Minister in the Ministry of Housing, Peter Phillips, said they had employed a number of small contractors with the aim of having the majority of the work completed by Christmas. (CA)
