Cop killer Applon Ishmael Ithamar Parris was today sentenced to 33 years in jail, but after the relevant discounts and time spent on remand were deducted, he was left with 16 and a half years, or 6 066 days as ordered by the court, starting today.

He is also set to undergo rehabilitation, including anger management, and be allowed to pursue any academic courses he so desires.

That was the sentence handed down by Justice Randall Worrell in the No. 2 Supreme Court earlier today.

Parris, of Taitt’s Road, Brittons Hill, St Michael, had previously pleaded guilty to the non-capital murder of Constable Shayne Welch on March 26, 2018.

During sentencing submissions, Director of Public Prosecutions, Queen’s Counsel Donna Babb-Agard had asked the court to implement a 30 to 35-year sentence, noting that defence counsel Safiya Moore’s request for 20 to 25 years before deductions was too low. (RA)
