Road Traffic regulations for republic activities

The Planning and Coordination of the national event in Heroes Square for the Declaration of Barbados as a Parliamentary Republic and the installation of the President has commenced.

Rehearsals and setup will take place from Tuesday November 23, 2021 and will necessitate traffic changes and road closures.

Road Closure

On Tuesday November 23, 2021 from 5 p.m. until midnight, Wharf Road from its junction with Bridge Street to its junction with Hincks Street; Ricketts Street, Trafalgar Street, Vauxhall Road and Upper Broad Street all in the City of Bridgetown shall be closed to vehicular traffic.

One Way Street

Bridge Street (Charles Duncan O’Neal Bridge), from 5 p.m. until midnight will be a one-way street to vehicular traffic. Traffic will flow southerly from the direction of St. Michael Row.

No Parking

Vehicles will not be allowed to park, or remain stationary on the following specified roads, except for the purpose for picking up or setting down passengers. These roads are:

(i) Constitution Road

(ii) St Michael Row

(iii) Bridge Street

(iv) Marhill Street

(v) Rickett Street

(vi) Fairchild Street

(vii) Cavan’s Lane

(viii) River Road

(ix) Martindales Road

Independence Day Parade – Monday November 29, 2021

On Monday November 29, 2021 between 8 p.m. and midnight, the Republic Day Parade will be held in Heroes Square.

In preparation for the occasion, it is necessary to have the road closures extended from Thursday November 25, 2021 to Thursday December 2, 2021. Seating accommodation, stage and other physical infrastructure will be erected and will obstruct the flow of regular traffic. Hence, the following changes will be implemented.

Road Closure

On Thursday November 25, 2021 from midnight until Thursday December 2, 2021 the following road closures will take effect.

  1. Trafalgar Street
  2. Broad Street from its junction with Prince William Henry Street to its junction with High Street
  3. High Street
  4. Wharf Road in the parish of Saint Michael shall be closed to all vehicular traffic.
  5. Vehicular traffic shall not be allowed to travel from Fairchild Street on to the Charles Duncan O’Neal Bridge

On the relevant date Monday 29th November 2021 during relevant period no person shall park along:

(a) Belmont Road;

(b) Constitution Road;

(c) Martindales Road;

(d) St Michael Row;

(e) Bridge Street;

(f) Trafalgar Street;

(g) Magazine Lane;

(h) Fairchild Street;

(i) Probyn Street;

(j) Bay Street;

(k) Palmetto Street; and

(l) Rickett Street,

All drivers and riders of vehicles, pedestrians and riders or leaders of animals using any of the roads specified shall exercise caution and shall comply with any order given by a member of the Police Force in uniform.

These road closures and diversions are expected to have significant impact on the travelling public within the city of Bridgetown and its immediate environs. Adjoining Highways and stretches of roads will have increased vehicular traffic throughout this period and delays in journey times are anticipated.

All motorists, businesses and members of the general public are asked to take careful note of these changes and adjust their business accordingly.

Police officers will be present at various junctions to supervise movement of vehicular traffic in and around these areas. Motorists are advised to comply with the directions of police officers in uniform on duty in these areas. (PR)
