Salvation Army kettle thief jailed for 12 months

The man who was caught on camera stealing a kettle belonging to the Salvation Army appeared in court yesterday after turning himself in to police.

Daniel Archer Smith, 22, of Kingsland, Christ Church, was jailed for 12 months by Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes after pleading guilty to stealing two kettles belonging to the Salvation Army on two consecutive days – November 19 and 20 – and breaking and entering two houses and stealing items belonging to two men.

The court heard that one of the kettles was posted outside S.Y. Adam on High Street, The City. The Army’s volunteer went to lunch, leaving it there. Smith took up the kettle and stand, and they were later discovered along Cavans Lane without the money it contained.

On the next occasion, he stole a kettle on Broad Street after the volunteer stepped away to purchase something. It was discovered along Philadelphia Lane, also in The City. (MB)
