Barbados will remain in the Commonwealth of Nations, an association of former British colonies.
Prime Minister Mia Mottley thanked visiting Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, whose royal lineage was jettisoned from today as Head of State and replaced by a president in Dame Sandra Mason, a Barbadian under a parliamentary republic.
Prince Charles took one final salute at the start of the Independence
Parade last night before Dame Sandra, the former Governor General and Queen’s representative here was installed.
The Prince’s presence in Barbados, said Mottley, showed there could be disagreement without being disagreeable and she cited his contribution fighting the threats to the environment.
Mottley said the country was in the process of transition from the 396 years of monarchical system and it would not happen overnight. (AC)
