The hectic pace created when Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced late last year that the General Election would be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 will draw to an end at midnight.

Candidates from all the political parties contesting the election hit the ground running, campaigning throughout communities.

Plans were outlined as some of the political parties launched their manifestos during meetings.

The General Election is being held under strict COVID-19 protocols and individuals in isolation either at home or in facilities are unable to cast their ballot.

The three-week campaign period saw its share of queries from the public, regarding candidates, eligibility for voting and protocols relating to novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

This was one of the major issues discussed during this campaign. Some people had also queried whether the Register of Electors was late. These issues were addressed by chairman of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission Leslie Haynes QC during a press conference on Monday, January 17.

Tonight the two major parties – The Barbados Labour Party led by Mia Amor Mottley and the Democratic Labour Party, led by President Verla De Peiza will be holding their last meetings in Bay Street, St Michael and Independence Square, The City respectively, where the last presentations before election day are customarily held.

Pat Parris, deputy campaign manager for the BLP, told Nation News: “The campaign went to plan and we are very confident.”

Parris said all 30 BLP candidates will be presented at the meeting tonight.

Additionally, BLP members expected to speak are: Indar Weir, Elizabeth Thompson, Dale Marshall, Kerrie Symmonds, Kirk Humphrey, Ralph Thorne, Santia Bradshaw and Mottley.

This is the first time in the history of Barbados that the two major political parties contesting the General Elections will be headed by women. (KG)
