The centuries-old Queen’s Park is to be transformed into the cultural hub of Barbados.
The historic site, where the commander in chief of the British Garrison was permanently stationed in Barbados from 1780 to 1905 and which later became the residence of the Governor of Barbados, is earmarked for a significant role in the island’s future cultural life.
In her address at yesterday’s first session of the new Parliament, President The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason announced plans to move the administrative offices of the National Cultural Foundation to the Park.
Performance and rehearsal spaces, studios, retail shops, and public art and artists-in-residence studios are also planned features of the transformed facility, which lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown And Its Garrison.
