Atherley: Give money to Dems

A rival political party has put a case why the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is deserving of the annual $150 000 subvention for political groups.

The reasoning is coming from Bishop Joseph Atherley, former member of the ruling Barbados Labour Party who switched to become Leader of the Opposition after its 30-0 clean sweep in May 2018. The feat was repeated in January 2022 General Election.

“I maintain from back then the Democratic Labour Party, being an established party that has contributed so much to governance and the development of Barbados economically and socially, politically and otherwise, should have been the beneficiary of part of that subvention and it should not go to one political party,” he said on Starcom Network’s Down To Brass Tacks radio call-in programme yesterday.

“If you are interested in democracy, you can’t only talk about giving two seats in the Senate. What about funding the political parties which are critical to the preservation of that democracy? (AC)
