Jomel Warrican made a welcomed strike for Barbados Pride in the final over before lunch, and Leeward Islands Hurricanes reached 72 for two in their first innings after they were sent in to bat on the first day of their first round match in the West Indies Championship on Wednesday at Kensington Oval.

Warrican, the West Indies Tes left-arm spinner, trapped Kacey Carty lbw for 20 on the back-foot with his first delivery, leaving left-hander Kieran Powell not out on 43 at the interval.

Carty had been very fortunate that Pride newcomer Ramon Simmons dropped him at deep fine leg off pacer Chemar Holder before he had scored and put on 52 for the second wicket with Powell.

Keon Harding gave Pride the breakthrough when he had long-serving Hurricanes opener Montcin Hodge caught behind for seven inside the last 20 minutes before the morning refreshments break.

Summarised scores:

Hurricanes 72 for two (Kieran Powell 43 not out, Kacey Carty 20) vs Pride.
