Leeward Islands Hurricanes were 102 for two in their second innings against Barbados Pride at lunch on the third day of their first round match in the West Indies Championship on Friday at Kensington Oval, still trailing by 50.

At the interval, Kacey Carty was not out on 25 and Devon Thomas was not out on 36, and have so far put on 47 – unbroken – for the third wicket, benefitting from a succession of wayward bowling from the Pride attack.

Pride also let themselves down in the field, when they spilled three chances, twice off the bowling of Keon Harding and once off fellow pacer Chemar Holder.

Fortunately, the reprieves they gave to Hurricanes openers Montcin Hodge and Kieran Powell did not cost them dearly, but Jomel Warrican put down Carty, on 17, at second slip off Holder in the final half-hour before the interval.

Before lunch, Hurricanes lost Hodge caught behind down the leg-side in the first over from rookie left-arm pacer Ramon Simmonds for five, glancing a rising delivery.

Simmonds struck a second blow in his fifth over when Kieran Powell was caught at second slip for 27, gloving a miscued hook.

Simmons, 20, a former West Indies Under-19 player, has so far taken 2-26 from six overs.

Summarised scores:

Hurricanes 172 for nine declared (Devon Thomas 58, Kieran Powell 43, Jahmar Hamilton 29, Kacey Carty 20; Keon Harding 4-42, Jonathan Carter 2-9) and 102 for two (Devon Thomas 36 not out, Kieran Powell 27, Kacey Carty 25 not out; Ramon Simmonds 2-26).

Pride 324 (Shamar Springer 91, Shane Dowrich 86, Kraigg Brathwaite 29, Jonathan Carter 25, Raymon Reifer 23, Chemar Holder 22, Shayne Moseley 13; Rahkeem Cornwall 4-99, Colin Archibald 3-47, Terrence Warde 2-42).
