Gems roll over Antigua

Battling annoying rain and then blazing sun, the Bajan Gems defeated Antigua and Barbuda 48-31 yesterday morning in the OECS Netball Series in Roseau, Dominica.

Persistent showers had scuttled the previous night’s full slate with the Gems fixtured to meet Dominica.  The Wednesday game against Antigua and Barbuda was then dropped down to eight o’clock and the Barbados/Dominica match was slotted in for 12 hours later.

However, the overnight rain continued while the Gems were at the venue getting their two-day COVID-19 rapid tests and then their PCR tests for their journey back home on Saturday. It took many attempts of drying the court before the game got under way at 11:30 a.m.

Barbados started with captain Latonia Blackman at goal shooter and Brianna Holder at goal attack. Stephian Shepherd ran centre with Zakiya Kirton at wing defence, Trishan Deane at wing attack and the powerful Shonette Bruce-Azore and Akeena Stoute in the defence circle. (KB)
