With over 300 firearm cases waiting to be heard, the High Court will soon embark on a policy that could see the majority of them cleared in mere months.
So said Justice Carlisle Greaves as he dismissed the notion that the imposition of fines for gun offences was not having a deterrent effect on offenders.
The judge was speaking as he dealt with two matters in the No. 3 Supreme Court.
“I can tell you right now we have over 300 firearm cases to do in the Supreme Court, two-thirds of which are for simple possession,” he said. The remainder involved cases of murder and robbery where a firearm was used, he added.
“Shortly we are going to embark on a policy and try to bring in all those possession cases and try to get rid of them.
“I believe we can dispose of about 200 of them in mere months and then the focus will be on the ones where people use the firearm. We will focus on those then because those are trials,” he said. (HLE)
