Stressing that the sentence was peculiar to his case, a High Court judge ordered a self-confessed gunman to pay $5 000 immediately for having a signal flare launcher.

However, Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell marvelled that people appear to find guns anywhere – even in cemeteries.

“The prevalence and ease at which members of the public have access to illegal firearms is of grave concern to right-thinking members of society,” she said. “Imagine, we have now reached the stage where, even in graveyards, we are finding illegal firearms.”

Justice Smith-Bovell handed down her sentence on Shawayne Shamal Lamar Shorey recently in the No. 4 Supreme Court. (HLE)
