Cynthia Forde, the long-standing parliamentary representative for St Thomas, has made a call for former Prime Minister J.M.G.M. “Tom” Adams, who also represented that constituency, to be made a national hero of Barbados.
She made the recommendation yesterday on the 37th anniversary of his death during a wreath-laying ceremony at his grave at St Michael’s Cathedral in Bridgetown.
Adams, at the age of 44, became Barbados’ second prime minister when the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won the September 2, 1976 General Election, defeating Prime Minister Errol Barrow and his Democratic Labour Party.
He died in office, at his official residence Ilaro Court, on Monday, March 11, 1985, at the age of 53.
Paying tribute to Adams, as well as to his father, National Hero Sir Grantley Adams, the first Premier of Barbados, who is also buried in the churchyard, Forde said he had made a tremendous contribution to Barbados. (MB)
