No Senate ‘obstacles’

No court action is preventing the Senate from sitting, and in two days the Upper Chamber will be convening back in the Parliament Buildings to debate the Appropriation Bill 2022.

This was made clear yesterday by President of the Senate Reginald Farley, who told the DAILY NATION all was on stream for senators to deal with the financial matters which will follow the Budget presentation taking place in the House of Assembly today.

As a result of the 30-0 General Election victory by the Barbados Labour Party on January 19, there is no Opposition and therefore no Opposition Leader or senators. This means, for the first time in Barbados’ history, there will not be an Opposition reply to the Budget.

Former Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite has sought judicial review in the High Court alleging that the Senate, with only 18 senators instead of 21, was not properly constituted and, by extension, neither was Parliament. (CA)
