Stressing that crimes against tourists have far-reaching consequences for Barbados’ economy, a judge slapped the gun-toting burglar, whose shot crippled a Canadian visitor in a botched burglary, and his cutlasswielding accomplice, with 31 years in jail yesterday.
However, after the deductions for their guilty pleas and time on remand, Alexander Patrick Alleyne and Travis Orin Campbell will serve a remaining 18 years, 212 days in prison.
That gunshot reverberated across Canada and on social media two years ago, forcing local tourism officials to do damage control on the island’s reputation as a safe destination as the complainant, now confined to a wheelchair, his wife, brother and sister-in-law declared they would not be back.
Alleyne, of Ealing Grove Gardens, Christ Church, and Guyanese-born Campbell, of no fixed place of abode, had pleaded guilty to entering Canadian visitor Robert Elliott’s house on February 22, 2020, with intent to steal and at the time they had a firearm and a cutlass. (HLE)
