CARIFTA team flies out to Jamaica

A 17-member Barbados team departed the island this morning to participate in the 49th edition of the CARIFTA Games over the Easter weekend (April 16 to 18) in Kingston, Jamaica.

Led by head coach Ramon Armstrong, Barbados’ best junior track and field athletes arrived at the Grantley Adams International Airport around 6:30 a.m. before boarding a Caribbean Airlines flight.

President of the Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB), Catherine Jordan also travelled with the team.

It will be the first CARIFTA Games since the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and the Barbados team will be hoping to equal or better the performance from three years ago of 11 medals (three gold, four silver, and four bronze) at the previous edition in the Cayman Islands.

Twelve athletes are expected to make their debuts.

The team will be managed by Angela Jackson and the assistant coaches are Jamal Grosvenor and Stephen Taitt.

The medical team consists of Phyllis Burnett and Shonnelle Trotman.

Under-17 girls: Ashlyn Simmons, Kadia Rock.

Under-20 girls: Kishawna Niles, Nya Browne, Shadae Worrell, Rickyla Fagan, Vivica Addison, Layla Haynes, Vanessa Greaves.

Under-17 boys: Fynn Armstrong

Under-20 boys: Josiah Parris, Ross Walrond, Aren Spencer, Jahleel Armstrong, Amani Mascoll-Beckles, Nikkolai Kennedy, Kevon Hinds.
