Jonathan Jones is the first Barbadian athlete to book a ticket to the World Athletics Championships Oregon 22 after a sensational victory in the men’s 400-metre final at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Invitational on Saturday in Baton Rouge.

The national record holder, who attends the University of Texas, produced an impressive performance to clock a season’ best 44.79 seconds, scorching a strong field in the one-lap contest and making the grade for the World Championships set for July 15 to 24.

Jones, 23, also qualified for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this summer from July 28 to August 8.

He stormed to the line ahead of Tiger Olympians’ Tyler Terry (45.08) and University of Florida’s Champion Allison (45.16).

At the moment, Jones who made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 where he reached the semi-finals of the biggest sporting event, is the eighth fastest runner in the world at 400 metres. (AGB)
