Hurricane chasing Triple Crown

The first Jewel of the Barbados Triple Crown is now history following Monday’s dominant win by Hurricane in the 72nd running of the Barbados Guineas at the Garrison Savannah.

The Gay Smith owned, Edward Walcott Jr trained and Arnold Morris groomed three-year-old bay colt by Storm Arrow out of Angelic Peace can now join an elite list of seven other horses who savoured Triple Crown success.

To etch his name alongside Watersmeet 1973, Ginger Lily 1980, Coo Bird 1989, Incitatus 1996, Zouk 2006, Areutalkintome 2009 and Peoples Champ 2021, Hurricane only needs to win the next two legs which will be the Midsummer Creole Classic over 1 800 metres and the 2 000 metres Barbados Derby.

The Springhead Stable shocking pink silks with blue stars occupied one-third of the 12 horses Barbados Guineas grade 1 field. Apart from the Antonio Bishop ridden Hurricane the stable was represented by Jaguar, Pussykat and Bobkat. (LY)
