Call to bring parties under Constitution

It is time to bring political parties under the Constitution as part of efforts to ensure free and fair elections.

The call has come from political scientist Devaron Bruce, who found support on the panel of the University of the West Indies’ seventh Town Hall On Republicanism, hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences yesterday. It dealt with the topic Constitutional Reform And The Republic: Perspectives Of The Youth.

Bruce was also in favour of a fixed election date but added that in the region, elections can be called early to catch an opposition party off guard.

“So in essence, that undermines the freeness and fairness of an election in many instances. We also have to discuss the political party itself. One of the things we have to think about is the inclusion of political parties in the constitutional arrangements that we have or legal arrangement,” he said. (AC)
