Paramaribo – President Chandrikapersad Santokhi said Suriname is taking several initiatives designed to improve the economy and trade missions from Caricom countries will be visiting the Dutch-speaking nation next month.

Santokhi told the National Assembly during the budget debate that the Trinidad & Tobago Manufacturing Association (TTMA) will be organising a trade mission in June in connection with the oil and gas conference that is co-organised by state-owned oil company, Staatsolie.

He said that a trade mission from Barbados is currently planned for June, and Suriname has successfully participated in the World Expo Dubai 2020.

Santokhi said virtual trade missions have also been organised with the Netherlands and contacts have been made with Brazilian trade promotion organisations after the visit of the Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro in January.

The Parliament was told that following the visit of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation minister, Albert Ramdin to Morocco, several virtual meetings were arranged between the Surinamese and Moroccan business community.

“Suriname has not only been placed on the map of the world, our art and culture, our nature, flora and fauna, and our diversity has been propagated in a professional manner, which has resulted in Suriname being awarded as one of the best pavilions,” Santokhi said.

He added that the Surinamese business community is currently participating in Floriade in the Netherlands, where the Surinamese agricultural and tourist product is exhibited.
