Call it a court lesson learnt from disobeying a biblical commandment.

Yesterday, David Ricardo Gittens found himself being sent to Dodds Prison after he failed to “honour” his mother who had signed his $10 000 bail. She withdrew as his surety and, after he failed to find a replacement, he was remanded to prison.

“Honour thy mother and thy father so that your days may be long in the land,” said Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes, who admitted he might be misquoting the text. “But the essence is respect your mother and father,” the Chief Magistrate stressed.

“Sometimes mothers need to understand what children are going through,” was Gittens’ response before he was led away.

Gittens, 50, of Storey Gap, Howells Cross Road, St Michael, was back in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court yesterday, where he is charged with having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old, between May 25 and 26, 2021. (HLE)
