Safe Rally Barbados the goal

The watchword for Sol Rally Barbados, starting today, is safety.

The stages are set for the start of one of the region’s most popular motorsport events to make its long-awaited return after last year’s cancellation.

Despite not being held for two years, the event appeared later in the calendar, so this weekend’s event also represents the rally’s return to its usual May-June slot.

With thousands of eager fans expected to line the stages for the duration of the two-day event, rally director Neil Barnard urged all involved to exercise the highest safety standards possible.

“What we are looking to see this weekend is more spectators than 2019 because there has been such a layoff,” Barnard told Saturday Sun Sports after his final drive-through of the course.

“We are just pleading with everybody to spectate safely. We’ve done all our work in terms of public service announcements regarding safety and through our social media channels explaining different aspects of the event. We are appealing to spectators to be sensible and enjoy it safely. (NM)
