Mottley’s plea to world leaders

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley told global leaders gathered at the ninth Summit Of The Americas yesterday that “there is so much trouble in the world”.

“I have chosen the words of Bob Marley because he reminds us of the day-to-day reality of our people and our citizens. We have come to Los Angeles hopeful that we are not going to just engage in speeches or platitudes, but we go home to make a difference at perhaps the most difficult time this world has seen in a hundred years,” she said.

Mottley, one of many Caribbean heads of government at the summit in California, said there were three crises which could bring down the world – climate, the pandemic and the cost of living.

Quoting more Marley, she asked the leaders to work together to come up with a course of action to help the suffering.

“Six and 12 weeks’ crop is what is going to feed our people. We need to be able to shield them from the price of fertiliser that is making their efforts almost impossible. We need equally to recognise that the debt crisis is among many developing countries. We simply do not have the fiscal space to respond to crises not spawned by ourselves but spawned by others,” she said. (NS)
