Chairman of the Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association (BHTA), Renee Coppin, has sought to debunk myths associated with Barbadians’ perceptions about Barbados’ tourism industry.
In her address to the BHTA’s 70th annual general meeting at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre yesterday, she said too often there were statements made about tourism that should not be allowed to go unchallenged.
In what she labelled a “fact-checking” exercise, Coppin said it was not a fact that Barbadians wanted the island to move away from the tourism industry to other things.
She said there was “a lot of fear and resentment around tourism and tourists during COVID-19”, but while “a lot of armchair pundits took to social media to speak to the dangers posed to the island by the continuing reliance on tourism”, the industry had clearly established why it should continue to be one of the main planks of Barbados’ economy.
