Amendments to the Safety and Health at Work (ShaW) Act are in the works.
Minister of Labour Colin Jordan gave that assurance on Friday and estimated that in a “few weeks” the modifications will be debated by public officials.
“We already had the first reading and we have in Parliament, hopefully, to be debated in a few weeks, amendments to the Safety and Health at Work Act. It’s been in place for a number of years but the regulations have not been in place.
“However, the Labour Department has placed quite a lot of emphasis on making sure there are regulations to address matters like sanitary conveniences, water, personal protection equipment and a whole range.
“So once the bill passes the Senate, then the regulations will come into force,” Jordan said.
He made those comments at Banks (Barbados) Breweries Ltd before touring the Newton, Christ Church facility with officials from the Barbados National Standards Institution. They were introduced to Bank’s safety culture as the company celebrated 1344 days and counting since their last lost-time injury. (TG)
