Too many people with disabilities find themselves unable to earn a decent living, despite having talent and the entrepreneurial spirit, said Minister of People Empowerment Kirk Humphrey.
Yesterday during the inaugural Entrepreneurial Market for Persons with Disabilities at the National Disabilities Unit, Collymore Rock, St Michael, he said: “While the quality of the work here is above par and in many cases excellent, many of these persons do not make much money.
“They struggle to feed their households, they struggle to feed themselves, but they do not want to rely on Government support, they do not want to be known as welfare recipients. They want to be able to live like anybody else. But the harsh reality is they don’t,” he said.
Humphrey said the members of the disabled community had the same right to live with a sense of dignity and to live the “Barbadian dream” as everyone else but the wider society had to give them the chance. (CA)
