Day for Six Men’s fishermen ‘a success’

The revival of Six Men’s Fisherman’s Day festivities, which included a tribute to a late resident, went better than organiser Sharifa Medford anticipated.

In fact, there are already talks about planning another event next year.  Medford gave that assessment on Saturday at the St Peter fishing village.

“When I was growing up this was a really big street party where all the fisherfolk from other communities came here for the day of activities but that was put on pause for a long time. So, this year, we decided to plan a walk for one of our friends [Curtis Martin] who died. And as it’s June, [when we celebrate] Fishermen’s Day, we decided to expand it,” she said.

Martin, a deejay in his late 30s who was also known as “Curtis HD”, died suddenly about two years ago.

“He was a major breadwinner for his household so we wanted to raise some funds to help his family. We asked people to donate and I had anticipated 30 to 40 people to walk but we had roughly 100 people,” Medford said.  (TG)
