COVID-19 death toll rises to 477

Health authorities reported on Thursday that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) claimed the life of a fully vaccinated, 89-year-old woman.

A media release from the Government Information Service (GIS) stated she died on Wednesday, bringing the number of deaths because of the viral illness to 477.

Health authorities also reported that 326 new cases of COVID-19 were detected among 79 women and 247 men from the 823 tests conducted by the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory on Wednesday.

Of the positive cases, 21 were under the age of 18.

A GIS media release stated that 38 people were now in isolation facilities, while 1 229 were in home isolation.

The public health laboratory has now conducted 704 874 tests since February 2020, and recorded 84 421 COVID-19 cases (38,631 men and 45,790 women).

At least 162 616 people (71.2 per cent of the eligible population) have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine under the national vaccination programme.

Officials of the vaccination programme have indicated that 153,510 (56.6 per cent of the total population or 67.2 per cent of the eligible population comprising people 12 years or older) have been fully vaccinated
