The COVID-19 pandemic has hindered many organisations from helping the vulnerable.
It was revealed yesterday that many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were under severe pressure with several in the region reaching the brink of closure.
Those were some of the findings of two studies during a Caribbean Development Centre (CPDC) online session entitled A Deep Dive Into The Post-COVID-19 Context for NGOs and their Beneficiaries in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
Project officer with the CPDC Christon Herbert said that his study; COVID-19 Impact on NGOs, consisted of 50 organisations in Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis and St Vincent and the Grenadines, which participated in various focus groups.
“We had organisations that indicated they lost or cancelled two to three projects over the pandemic and this put them in a tighter bind in terms of providing for their beneficiaries.
“Some organisations indicated that they were on the brink of closure due to the lack of funding and opportunities to improve funding . . . as they were unable to do the usual fundraising activities,” Herbert said. (TG)
