Prison experts and academics are set to investigate how to restructure regional penal institutions when a Symposium on Prison Reform starts today.

Professor Velma Newton, regional project director of IMPACT Justice, the organiser of the event, said the aim is to have a frank discussion on the issues being experienced by the prisons.

“We’re hoping to hear from these prisons directors and academics where they think we should go and what measure should be taken,” Newton told the Daily Nation ahead of the start of the two-day hybrid symposium at the St Kitts Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay.

Acting Superintendent of Dodds Prison Decarlo Payne is expected to be among those giving a Country Report On Prison Conditions And Proposed Reform on the first day via Zoom.

Barbados is in the midst of an investigation into conditions at its lone adult prison and that suffered a setback early last month when the head of that three-member probe committee, attorney Philip Pilgrim resigned. He has since been replaced and the committee is continuing its objective of reviewing the protocols, said the Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams recently.  (AC)
