The Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) is appealing to public service vehicle (PSV) operators to desist from using non-designated routes when transporting commuters unless absolutely necessary.

Communications and marketing officer Mark Haynes has made the call in light of a complaint made by several Christ Church residents in Garden Road No.1 and No.2, which is currently before the Ministry of Transport and Works.

Householders lamented that PSV operators were “illegally” using the roads in that district mainly during rush hours to divert from congested traffic along Hastings.

Haynes told the Daily Nation AOPT was “deeply concerned” about the development and he urged the PSV operators to stop the practice.

“The operators are given a route and they should stick to the route given by the Transport Authority. They should not deviate except in the event of an accident, in which an area along their route becomes impassable, or if they are instructed by a police officer to do so,” he said.  (SB)
