WI end with whimper

An implosion of their batting left West Indies to count the cost of another chastening One-day International series defeat yesterday in Trinidad.

Chasing a revised target of 257 to win from 35 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method in the rain-affected second ODI against India at Queen’s Park Oval, no West Indies batsman distinguished himself.

West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran and Brandon King led the way with 42 each, and Shai Hope made 22, but no other batsman reached 20, and the Caribbean side slumped to a 119-run defeat.

Spin, the eternal bane of West Indies batsmen, again proved their undoing with wiry leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal ending with the flattering figures of 4-17 from four of his allotted seven overs.

The West Indies have endured nine straight ODI losses and their third successive 0-3 series defeat following the same result against Pakistan in Pakistan and in the preceding series against Bangladesh. (AR)
