Barbados Women gave early proof that they are not playing in the 2022 Commonwealth Games women’s cricket tournament only to make up the numbers.

An all-round performance from new West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews and a half-century from fellow international Kycia Knight set up the Barbadians to create history when they stunned Pakistan Women by 15 runs in their opening Group “A” match yesterday in Birmingham, England.

Sent in to bat at Edgbaston, Barbados coasted to 144 for four off their 20 overs with the left-handed Kycia Knight striking a brisk unbeaten 62 off 56 balls, and her captain Matthews lashing 51 off 50 balls.

Matthews then had a hand in four of the Pakistan dismissals before Nida Dar redeemed herself with a brisk 50 off 31 balls after running out two of her teammates, Dar, however, could not get the Asian side over the finish line, coming up short at 129 for six. (CMC/AR)
