Gems lose second netball match

Barbados Gems lost their second successive netball match at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham England, falling 91-36 to South Africa on Sunday.

Coach Margaret Cutting played an unchanged circle and co-captain Latonia Blackman led the way at goal attack with 21 goals from 24 attempts. Goal shooter Shonica Wharton added 15 from 21.

For South Africa, who led 23-9, 43-18 and 66-27, starting shooter Elmere van der Berg missed only two of her 49 attempts, while Ine-Mari Ventner scored 14 from 16, Lefebre Rademan 12 from 16 and Nichole Taljaard 18 from 20.

Barbados will face an even tougher assignment against World No. 4 Jamaica on Monday.

In other matches played on Sunday, Malawi beat Northern Ireland 54-41, Uganda brushed aside Trinidad and Tobago 62-28 and Wales edged Scotland 48-42. (SAT)
