A plethora of tributes characterised the contribution to Barbados by late lawyer, politician and teacher Ezra Alleyne whom Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley described as “a patriotic Barbadian”, during his funeral service yesterday.

In her tribute delivered to a packed chapel at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens, Mottley said: “The Parliament of Barbados is the poorer . . . . The courts of Barbados will always be poorer . . . . The Barbados Labour Party will be poorer . . . . If all of those entities that I just referred to are poorer, then by extension the country of Barbados is poorer by his absence.”

Several parliamentarians and representatives of the legal profession turned out to pay final respects to the attorney who was said to have distinguished himself in his profession from early, earning the moniker “Perry Mason” on the street because of his success at criminal trials.

Alleyne’s prowess and tenacity as “a brilliant lawyer” were recounted by Justice William Chandler, prominent attorney Sir Richard Cheltenham, president of the Barbados Bar Association Rosalind Smith-Millar and former Chief Justice Sir David Simmons.

The Bar Association president noted that Alleyne “was held in high esteem not only in Barbados but across the bars of the Caribbean region”. (GC)
