Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defence Force (BDF), Commodore Errington “Ricky” Shurland, has pledged to rebrand the BDF Sports Programme (BDFSP).

He made the commitment on Sunday during the BDF’s 43rd annual church service at St Matthias Anglican Church, St Matthias, Christ Church.

“We are working towards a rebranded sports programme. In the past, the sports programme has excelled in football, cricket, boxing, table tennis and athletics,” he said.

“What the force offers is a unique blended opportunity to allow athletes to train within a disciplined environment which aids in their character development. I am of the view that this is value added for sports and youth development in Barbados.”

In 2018, speculation was rife that the programme, a nursery for some of the island’s most talented sportspeople, would be halted.  (RA)
