Cybersecurity issues are a bigger headache than COVID-19, says acting Chief Telecommunications Officer Clifford Bostic.

The featured speaker at yesterday’s closing ceremony for the Regional Security System (RSS) Training Institute’s Restricted Radio Operator Course at Paragon Base, Christ Church, he said hackers were now a bigger problem than ever as technology progressed.

“As we go digital, as we go from paper-based [systems] to electronic, as you connect more on the Internet to conduct transactions, there’s something called cybersecurity, which is a bigger pain than COVID because as we speak there are several Government agencies and small businesses being attacked and sometimes when those attacks take place, we lose communications,” he said.

Bostic said another cause of loss to information and communications technology and telecommunication systems was natural disasters, which could wipe out communications to entire islands in an instant.

He added that, in cases of hackers or disasters, it was important to have an alternative method of communication, which was where the radio course came in. (CA)
