Five trainers are finalising preparations to win the Barbados Derby on Saturday at the Garrison Savannah for the first time, despite being at the mercy of Hurricane.

Pushing off from the 2 000 metres start around 7 p.m., Hurricane seems set to become this island’s eighth Barbados Triple Crown winner.

While the Gay Smith-owned colt lines up against 11 of the best three-year-olds, the charges of trainers Kenny John, Eddie Belle, Phillip Batson, Remell “Perkins” Lovell and Robert Peirce should not be underestimated.

The 83rd edition of the grade 1 Barbados Derby which is worth $113 000 is the eighth and penultimate race of the evening’s nine-race programme.

Can Hurricane be stopped? That’s the main question facing the Edward Walcott Jr trainee, who has tormented his peers.  (LY)
