COVID-19 update for August 31

Health authorities in Barbados reported on Thursday that two elderly men were the latest to die from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and 95 new cases of the viral illness were detected in the island.

According to a news release from the Barbados Government Information Service, a 73-year-old man died this past Tuesday from the illness, while an 86-year-old man died this past Wednesday, August 31. As a consequence, the death toll from the virus has reached 544.

Health authorities also indicated 55 males and 40 females tested positive for COVID-19 from 451 tests carried out by laboratories across the island on Wednesday.

The cases included 12 young people under the age of 18.

At the same time, there were 82 people seeking medical treatment in government isolation facilities, while 1 406 were being monitored under the home isolation programme of the Ministry of Health.

Health authorities also reported that 163 212 people (71.5 per cent of the eligible population) have been administered at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine under the national vaccination programme.

The number of people now considered fully vaccinated under the programme has risen to 154 411 (57 per cent of the total population or 67.6 per cent of the eligible population).

The eligible population is anyone 12 years and older.
