Oh, what could have been!

Barbadian racer Zane Maloney narrowly missed out on winning the drivers’ championship of the 2022 FIA Formula 3 season by five points after winning an unprecedented third consecutive Feature Race yesterday during the season’s final round at the Monza circuit in Italy.

In what has been a remarkable late season revival for the talented 18-year-old, Maloney made sure he did all he could to give him the highest finish possible in the standings.

On one hand, Maloney will celebrate yesterday’s victory, but he will know, had it not been for some premature race retirements and some sprint race collisions early in the season, the Formula 3 crown could have been his in his rookie season.

Maloney gained 82 points from the last three rounds at Spa-Francorchamps, Zandvoort and finally Monza to finish second overall with 134 points and was the highest placed rookie.

Frenchman Victor Martins of ART Grand Prix led the drivers’ table for most of the season and finished fourth yesterday to eventually hold on to the title.  (NM)
