The Most Rev Bishop Malcolm Patrick Galt CSSp, the second Roman Catholic Bishop of Bridgetown, died peacefully on Sunday at home in Trinidad and Tobago.

He was 93 years old.

“As a successor of Bishop Galt, I remain grateful for all that he did to help build this Diocese. When he was appointed Bishop of Bridgetown, I was serving as a priest in the US Virgin Islands but I have heard much about his humility, humour and hard work,” said Bishop Neil Scantlebury.

“I thank God for the gift of him to the Church and, in particular, to the Church in Barbados. On behalf of the Diocese of Bridgetown, I extend condolences to his relatives, to his Congregation and to the Archdiocese of Port of Spain. May he rest in peace.”

Bishop Emeritus Galt was ordained a priest in July 1955 and belonged to the Congregation of the Holy Ghost Fathers. In April 1995, he was appointed Bishop of Bridgetown and served until his retirement in May 2005

He will be remembered at Masses throughout the Diocese of Bridgetown in the coming weeks. Funeral arrangements are still being finalised in Trinidad. (PR/SAT)
