The #BarbadosNationalDay has been trending for almost 24 hours on Bajan Twitter in the wake of the announcement by Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams, that November 30 would combine celebrations of both Independence and Republic Day.
Some of the usually more vocal accounts are quiet, but others have waded into the debate, many voicing their disagreement with the decision.

Why we simply couldn’t get another day to commemorate republic day or Barbados national day or whatever y’all wanna call it????? What’s the point……….. November 30th will always be known to us as Independence Day.

If the PM is suggesting that the day is still Independence Day and it is also Republic Day and that ‘Barbados National Day’ is simply like an overarching title that refers to them both then i don’t take issue. BUT it still feels unnecessary.

Disclaimer: I’m not bajan but my heritage is there & I ❤️ the country as if it were my birthplace.. IMO the change to Barbados National Day does not erode the legacy of independence but rather increases the notion of Barbadian pride & nationalism 🇧🇧#mytwocents @miaamormottley
