Ellerton and Weymouth Wales will clash in the final of the 2022 Barbados Football Association (BFA) Republic Cup this weekend to decide who wins the $30 000 prize.

It was an enthralling night of semi-final action at the Wildey Turf on Sunday as fans packed the venue to witness the first major tournament since the pandemic.

In the early kickoff, Wales stormed into yet another final with a dominant 3-1 over Wotton with goals from Kemar Headley, Nadre Butcher, and Tyrel Rayside-Demendonca. Butcher’s goal was particularly delightful as he danced around a hapless challenge and then slammed a shot into the roof of the net, to loud applause from the fans.

Wotton’s lone goal was a late consolation from skipper Keion Harding.

The late game between Ellerton and Paradise finished 1-0 but had the feel of a cup final as palpable, anxious energy radiated from the near 3 000 fans packed into the stands whenever either side approached the final third.

Ellerton’s goalkeeper Jamar Brewster was outstanding on the night, making three vital saves in the first half to keep his side in the contest.

After 72 minutes, it appeared to be in vain after a contentious penalty was given and Paradise captain Armando Lashley was poised to take it. Brewster’s heroic performance continued as he parried the penalty wide, much to the support from adoring fans.

In the second minute of added time, Ellerton were awarded a penalty for a clumsy foul on captain Shakille Belle and he made no mistake, burying Paradise’s hopes in the process.

The 8:30 p.m. final this Sunday is preceded by the Women’s Super League final between FVFC FEMENI and UWI Blackbirds at 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. (JC)
