Police are urging members of the public who are downwind of a fire in the Brighton, St Michael, area to evacuate.

Public Affairs and Communications Officer, acting inspector Rodney Inniss, says they are dealing with a hazmat fire, and at this time, they do not know what chemicals, if any, may be involved.

Three fire tenders are on the scene and police have already cordoned the area and are redirecting traffic as thick plumes of black smoke fill the air.

Inniss says they were told of the fire around 5:49 a.m. by the Barbados Fire Service.

The Mighty Grynner Highway is also being closed as the height of the plume is falling and security firm G4s, which is in the vicinity, has started removing its vehicles. (SAT)
